Over 9.80 lakh residential consumers in Mumbai owe Rs 673 crore to power companies – ET RealEstate

MUMBAI: Of the 45 lakh residential consumers in Mumbai, 9.82 lakh owe Rs 673 crore to power distribution companies. This is what the Maharashtra energy department has collated from Adani Electricity, Tata Power and BEST.

If consumers from the rest of the state are included, then 1.35 crore consumers of MSEDCL have bill arrears to the tune of Rs 5,003 crore. This comes at a time when the Maha Vikas Aghadi government has gone back on its promise of relief to those who got inflated power bills as well as providing free power to those consuming up to100 units.

A large number of residential consumers in Mumbai haven’t paid their electricity bills since the lockdown, complaining that the bills were inflated.

Sources said that these are the figures collated by the state’s energy department from the power distributors of Tata Power, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited and Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST).

Of the 9.82 lakh residential consumers who have yet to clear their bills, 7.13 lakh are consumers of Adani Electricity who owe Rs 385 crore followed by Tata Power whose 1.48 lakh consumers have unpaid arrears of nearly Rs 57 crore and 1.21 lakh consumers of BEST who are yet to pay Rs 231 crore.

Meanwhile, across the state, there are around 1.35 crore consumers of MSEDCL who owe Rs 5003 crore.

The energy department’s figures also mention that 11.67 lakh consumers complained about overcharging and inflated power bills across the state between June and October this year.

Of these, in Mumbai, 2.33 lakh complaints have raised with Tata Power, followed by 1.52 lakh complaints with BEST and another 29,000 complaints with Adani Electricity. The state officials said that majority of these complaints have been resolved.

In a recent interview to Mumbai Mirror, Maharashtra’s Energy Minister Nitin Raut said that the consumers will have to pay their overdue bills and that the state government doesn’t have money to provide any relief.
