VISAKHAPATNAM: Around two lakh beneficiaries in the greater Visakhapatnam for urban housing are eagerly waiting for the allotment of flats or sites. It is recalled that the state government is acquiring lands for more than 25 lakh beneficiaries in the state.

As part of it, around three lakh people applied for housing in Vizag. Of which around 2 lakh people were identified as eligible beneficiaries. Before this exercise, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has identified 25,000 people as beneficiaries out of 40,000 paid Demand drafts of Rs 25,000 each for the housing. They were also identified as eligible as per the new guidelines by the YSRCP government. They would be allotted the houses already grounded.

The remaining eligible people would get the house sites and not the houses. Those who have paid demand drafts of Rs. 25,000 for the housing and were found ineligible would get their money back. The GVMC would re-verify those names and if they were ineligible then their money (DD amount) would be returned,, sources in the GVMC said.

โ€œLists of all the beneficiaries were displayed in the ward secretariats. If anyone feels that they are eligible, they can also apply again. As per the government rules, any eligible person can get the house site in 90 days,โ€ the GVMC commissioner G Srijana told TOI. She added that house sites for the poor is a continuous process. Even in the last three months around 3000 new applications were reached to the GVMC.

People have applied for the house sites in October in the last year and also March and April in this year. Now, the revenue authorities are identifying around 6000 acres of land in Anakapalli, Anandapuram and Bheemili mandals for the two lakh people identified as eligible for house sites.

GVMC commissioner Srijana said that out of three lakh applications, around 2.02 lakh people were identified as eligible, including the persons who paid 25,000 DDs (around 40,000 people who paid the DD amount) for the housing.

Sources said that the TDP government had planned to construct one lakh houses for the urban poor a few months before the elections last year. But only 25,000 houses were constructed.
